Hear are some devotional thoughts based on Part 2 of our series, Breaking Bad.
"In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus." Romans 6:11
If we’re dead to sin, if sin isn’t our master, how do we live that out? Living as a slave to sin takes no initiative on our part. What does it look like to live without sin as master over our mouths, our eyes, our
minds, our insecurities, our appetites?
Questions to think about..
1. How would you define the word “sin”?
2. Have you ever tried to conquer sin in your life through will-power? What happened?
3. When you wrestle with sin, which side of the argument do you identify with, Adam (here I go again) or Christ (sin is not my master)?
4. Read Colossians 3:1–4. What do you think Paul means when he writes that “you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ”? Why is it hard to live as though this is the truth?
Application:
■ Today, pick a member of your body and dedicate it as an instrument of righteousness. Hint - pick the one that gives you the most trouble.
■ Now recognize the times that sin asks to borrow that body part and remember that sin is no longer your master and you do not have to yield that part to it anymore.
■ Wake up in the morning and pray, “Today, Lord, I am giving you my _____. I have been giving it to sin for a long time. But I am giving you my ______ this day.”
When sin comes calling, it comes against Christ in you. You can’t handle it, but Christ can—not because he’s more disciplined, but because your life dwells in him. Everyday, declare that sin is not your master, decide not to let sin rule you, and devote the members of your physical body as instruments of right-doing.
Memorize:
"Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires." Romans 6:12
